Sometimes the most remarkable donations arrive in the most unexpected ways. Recently, upon returning home, we discovered a box left at our doorstep with no name, no return address, and no accompanying note.

Curious about its contents, we brought the box inside and opened it. To our great surprise, it contained a collection of items dating from the Second World War. We therefore assume that it was left by an anonymous donor. If this is not the case, we would be delighted to hear from the donor and invite them to leave us a message.

The box contained, among other things:

• Several censored envelopes. During the war, mail was often opened and inspected by the German authorities for possible secret messages.
• A French Adrian helmet bearing a Luftschutz sticker. The Luftschutz was the German civil air defense organization responsible for protecting civilians during air raids.
• A German desk or bunker telephone.
• A sheet of wartime postage stamps.
• A German naval pouch, believed to have been used for optical equipment.
• A Feldpost newspaper distributed to German military personnel.

Each of these objects tells its own story and serves as a tangible reminder of an important period in history. Together, they help us better understand the past and preserve it for future generations.
